The Royal 160

Ther Skogen Effect

The Royal 160 is a Chris Skogen creation, born from the original Almanzo 100.  Sixty miles longer than the ever popular 100 mile race, it gives a gravel lover even more of what they came for. For me these days, that seems to be solitude…with the occasional welcome interlude from a fellow gravel-cycling compatriot.

I had a good race. Not a barn-burner, but I felt strong through the entire 160 mile course. I climbed all the steep river valley hills and stayed steady through the headwinds. And reveled in the miles of sailing tailwinds. Most of all, I had a few of those magic moments  when the song playing in my ears matched the landscape so well that I got a chill down my spine. Or the connectedness that comes only from cycling through a landscape. And finding that last drop of energy to get those muscle fibers to twitch up one last hill. These are the things that I ride for. This is why I love gravel.

Skogen has created a thing of beauty in his Almonzo Gravel races. Thank you.
